Crossfit Actus - Mobility

Driven by performance!

I had a great morning today. My wife and I brought our 3 y.o. to the Cumberland Farmer's Market. We ate food made from scratch. We played at the park. I then participated in a mobility class at Crossfit Actus.

The best way that I can explain to you the mobility class is with Alex Belanger's Instagram post (Alex was my coach today):

lexbelanger ''Here’s a revolutionary post that shouldn’t be revolutionary. This picture encompasses 80% of my training. All those amazing athletes you see online do sooo much behind the scenes that is the reason why they’re as good as they are. (...) Spend more time mobilizing, stretching or best of all slowing down work on tempo, or position and work on quality.''

The mobility class is heavily inspired by Kelly Starrett's work. Kelly Starrett is the author behind the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller book Becoming a Supple Leopard.

"All human beings should be able to perform basic maintenance on themselves."
- Kelly Starrett

In fact, coach Alex is currently taking his Mobility Wod Specialist course. Here are his other qualifications:

CrossFit Level 1 (CF-L1 Certificate Holder)
CrossFit Level 2 (CF-L2 Certificate Holder)
CrossFit Specialty Course: Weightlifting
CrossFit Specialty Course: Gymnastics
CrossFit Specialty Course: Mobility
Mobility WOD Movement & Mobility Specialist (currently completing certification)
CPR + AED certified

If you're interested in taking a Mobility Wod course, Crossfit Actus is hosting one October 6, 2018.

Now back to the actual training session. The class started at 11: 15. I showed up a bit early. Today was bring a friend day and the place was packed (that's always a good sign of a good gym, or in this case a good box). In between classes, the coaches organized an impromptu game of Spike Ball.

Right away, I could see what people mean when they talk about a crossfit community. Staff and clients were playing and laughing together and this was after a workout. Some were lounging on the couches and watching the game. Awesome! Once the mobility class started, members went to the other side of the gym and kept playing. Even adults need to play to stay young.

Today's focus was on ankle mobility (Great, I thought to myself. This will help my old soccer injury). We warmed up and then tested our ankles' ROM (range of motion). We did some more ankle exercises and retested our ROM. I improved! Good job coach Alex. We finished off with a few balancing games to keep things pleasant.

Alex was really good at explaining the exercises. He could demo them which is always a bonus. He kept the atmosphere light by using comic relief. I've been following him on Instagram for a few weeks and he knows his stuff.

I've now known the head coach and owner Jonathan Di Pierro for a few years. He lives in my community and our daughters play together at the local park. I've had the chance to talk to him about Crossfit quite a few times. I really think he's on to something with Crossfit Actus. Including a mobility class really shows that he cares about his clients. He wants them to be good athletes but also healthy. Playing a game of Spike Ball in between classes also shows that he likes to have fun (because let's be honest, Crossfit is known to be a high intensity workout).

Jonathan and his wife Dominique (also a coach) are great role models for the Crossfit world and our community. Keep up the great work guys. Bonus points, they're also bilingual!

Here's a bit more information about Crossfit Actus (taken from their website)...
